Visas & Customs Requirements

Students:

There are some specific requirements that must be met in order to apply for a student visa and successfully obtain one. Any American that is not also a European Union national will need to be in possession of a valid student visa in order to be allowed to stay in Italy for a period greater than 90 days for purposes of studying at an Italian university.

All non European Union nationals that want to study in Italy should be prepared to provide proof that they either have already enrolled for classes at an Italian university or that they have accepted an offer of admission to an Italian university. In addition to this, your proof of admission should also indicate clearly when your studies begin and when your studies end. Also, be prepared to present this proof of admission or attendance from the approved school or university in the form of a letter that either has the official seal of the school or that is notarized.

Sometimes you might be attending a school in the United States which is sponsoring your studies at a particular Italian university. If this is the case for you, the document requirements are similar in nature. If you are planning on coming to Italy to study and your studies are sponsored by an educational institution in your home country or country of residence (the United States for Americans), then you will need to have a letter from this university or college that confirms this situation. As is the case if attending an Italian university directly, you will need to have this letter with either the official seal of the school or it must be notarized.

In addition to needing to be in possession of documents that confirm your admission to an Italian university, you will also need to be in possession of proof of health and financial resources. To be issued a student visa, you will have to present proof of having valid health insurance.

Beyond that, the health insurance needs to provide coverage for you within the borders of Italy. Before you apply for your student visa, you should verify your insurance coverage with your insurance provider. As for your finances, you will have to show proof of having sufficient financial resources to pay for both your living expenses and your studies while in Italy. Your local Italian consulate can look over your paperwork to make sure that you have everything you need.

Residence Permits for Students

After you make a successful application for your student visa with your local Italian consulate, they will send you your student visa. When you arrive in Italy you are to report to the local police station with your student visa to register your arrival. When you do this, you will be given a student residence permit, which grants you the ability to make Italy your legal residence for a period of one year.
